I was at the Chitwan National Park a week ago and one of the 'attractions' was the elephant breeding center. It's hard not to feel sorry for the haattis, especially the little ones, two years olds, chained to large stump of trees. And during the elephant 'rides' they seemed very reluctant and prodded forward by the mahouts with iron prongs. Most of them looked old and overworked and underfed. A mahout told me that they were working for about 10 hours a day, especially now that the number of tourists seems to be growing over there.
Anyway, the good news is that they're not going without a fight, although, tragically, they seem to be attacking each other and going mental rather than focusing on the true enemy specie.
