A question

Why do people like to brag about pulling an all nighter? Is not getting sufficient sleep something to be proud of?

1. i guess, some people want peer acknowledgment. they feel like they've achieved something - "an all-nighter is a physical feat," if you will. they'd be in heaven if they were the she in, "wow! that all-nighterer is so tough! she does not need the usual and customary sabbath that biology intended for human bodies." plain old bravado. rubbish, if you ask me.

2. i think most people just want the sympathy vote - more "i HAD to stay up" than "i WAS ABLE to stay up". people just love to complain, fact. they have so much responsibility, they have so much work - they didn't even get to sleep. they ought to be fairly compensated (more money!, higher grades!!, more sex!!!).

whiners. no one should be proud of not getting their forty winks. why should you be compensated for your utter inability to manage time and prioritize? just shut up, and go back to work like the protestant jesus says.

besides, there is no constitution in the world that guarantees the right to sleep.

but, here's the inevitable but, it seems like there're some contradictions here.
by bragging about not sleeping, if we're trying to signal out strength (I can hunt day and night, my genes are strong, have sex with me!), we're admitting to our weakness in priorotizing, time management, crisis avoidance etc.

asking for sympathy vote is probably a bad strategy to get sex, grades, money etc.

I have doubts about the evolutionary biology explanation.

hahahaha.

i have doubts about the term "evolutionary biology" itself. mostly because i am such an ignoramus.

anyways, the contradiction is probably in the difference between what you seek and what you get. the bid - ask spread, if you will.

in the case of all-nighters:
"i've worked so hard!" is the basis for the ask.

"what have you done for me (or what can i expect you to do for me?" is the basis for the bid.

i agree, ASKING is probably a bad strategy to GET something. again the more fundamental bid-ask spread.

doesn't stop people from asking though.

what do i know, i'm just blabbering. but having fun nonetheless.

sylvi meows! and purrs!!

where does this fit on the evolutionary biology scheme:

"evolutionary biology" reasoning, the way I understand it, is that the reason for everything is to spread genes around... sow your wild oats.
I discovered the meow accidentally too. having fun with it everyday.
