Army Should be Deployed if Intimidation Continues: Deuba (source: http://www.nepalnews.com/archive/2008/apr/apr01/news12.php)
What's up with this guy's fetish with the army? I mean, he himself tried deploying the army to contain the Maoist insurgency! (And, for those who forgot, he failed. Miserably.)
Two bitter truths that every Nepali politicians should now know:
1. The army can never contain an insurgency. Any insurgency. At most, it can weaken the insurgency and increase the probability that the insurgents will come to the negotiation table. Deploying army to contain the Maoist excesses when the Maoists are in government is pointless and plain stupid. Think of a better way to push the country into a civil war if you are so worried that your sorry ass will never be the prime minister of Nepal again!
2. The Maoist can never win over the hearts of the Nepali people -- or take over the regime -- by force. Again, tried and failed. So, when Prachanda warns that the Maoists might go back to the jungle if the Maoists lose the elections, the answer should be, "Please feel free, you moron. The way you think is close to that of animals than humans anyway."

Absolutely,
Apparently, the army is displeased that it doesn't have any role in this elections as it used to in previous ones. Thus their chamches and minions never miss an opportunity to raise the army's profile.
I haven't heard Prachanda say he'll go back to the jungle. He's going to stay in Kathmandu and make life hell for a lot of people for a long time if the Maoists don't win. There's no reason for Maoists to go back to the jungle. They'll carry on a la UML circa 1995. My interpretation is that the "win" for the Maoists means doing reasonably well, i.e. either second or third place in the CA election.
which animal are you equating the maoists with? you know how many kinds there are.
Re: second or third place, that's my interpretation, too. Prachanda is really the "moderate" part of the Maoists I think (my reason for using his name is that he is the leader of the party, not so much the leader of the hardcores). In any case, if he plans to stay in Kathmandu, we would have to compare his party to a domestic animal, perhaps a bheda? :)
What's the "feel" in Kathmandu? My sources in Arghakhanchi 1 tell me that the whim among young people is to vote for the Maoists. Quite a few people from Kathmandu traveling home just for the elections re. And I wouldn't call these people illiterate or ignorant. I, for one, continue to be fearful of the Maoists, largely because they don't seem to mend their ways.
The "feel" in kathmandu is that elections are going to be postponed.
The "feel" in Banke is that UML need not be confident at all about its prospects.
when did sheep become the most belligerant of animals
the "feel" here is ... i need more beer.
The government has announced that Nepal will be dry for three days before elections and three days after. No alcohol can be consumed or produced from 7-13 April. Violators will be fined Rs 50,000 or sent to jail for a month, or both.
